Gr. 5 Used App to Play Music

Fifth graders used an iPad app called Notion, purchased as part of the Innovation Grant that Elizabeth Wooster and Frank van Atta received this year. Students are studying the major scale—playing it on keyboards and mallet instruments, as well as their iPads. They used Notion to notate a French folksong entitled In the Moonlight. The folksong was introduced to the students through listening only, and students deduced the form, rhythm, and pitches using solfege and rhythm syllables. All of that information was transferred to the five line staff with absolute pitch names. In these photos, students played the G Major and C Major Scales and then played the folksong using their notation in the key of G major.
