Global Studies Students Attended Author Reading at The Harvard Bookstore

Students in the Global Studies Diploma Program recently traveled to Harvard Square to attend a reading and question and answer session with Yeonmi Park, twenty-one year old author of the autobiography, In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom. The Harvard Bookstore sponsored this hour-long event amidst the store's bookshelves as part of its ongoing calendar of author events. Ms. Park, a former citizen of North Korea who now resides in South Korea read an excerpt from her autobiography and took questions from the audience before sitting down to sign copies of her book. Attending the event were Regina Carey, '16, Sarah Smith, '17, Ethan Eastwood, '18, and Grant Iuliano, '18. The students were accompanied by Mr. Iuliano, who is a member of the Global Studies Program Committee and teaches the Upper School elective course, Introduction to International Relations. The presentation was compelling and informative as Ms. Park discussed her former life in North Korea, her courageous escape from that country, and her new life and education in South Korea. Her story presented many of the challenging human rights concerns that confront us today both generally throughout the world and particularly in North Korea.

Prior to Ms. Park's presentation, the group had a brief, serendipitous visit from Genevieve Lefevre, '15 who is currently in her freshmen year at Harvard University. She stopped in at the Harvard Bookstore to say hello after completing a rehearsal for an upcoming performance at the ART.
