Social Studies

The social studies program, which incorporates the 10 thematic strands recommended by the National Council for the Social Studies, provides opportunities for students to see themselves as part of a community—from the classroom to the family to the country and the world. An understanding of our country and the ability to make thoughtful decisions as members of a diverse and democratic nation in a global society is the focus from grade to grade. Geography and map skills enhance students’ understanding of a changing world. An awareness of the Earth’s limited resources and how we use, develop, and share them encourages social responsibility.
