Welcoming Emily Miller - Our New LS Head

Brimmer is pleased to announce that Emily Miller will be joining our community for the 2019-2020 school year as our new Head of Lower School. Emily brings to Brimmer over 20 years of experience in school administration and in-classroom teaching, most recently serving as the Head of School at PK-8 Nantucket Lighthouse School.

“We are pleased to welcome Emily as Lower School Head and introduce her to the Brimmer community. Her career as both an administrator and classroom teacher, with a strong focus on innovative curriculum design for early childhood education and a passion for individualized student support, makes her a natural fit for the role,” said Head of School Judith Guild. “We look forward to having her on board to lead the Lower School’s teacher development, student learning, and implementation of relevant curricular and pedagogical practices.”

In her previous experiences, Emily worked collaboratively with her team to achieve administrative milestones such as campus expansion and staff growth. She also developed innovative strategies to promote community engagement and introduced a host of educational programs to build enrollment and bring free professional development to the island. Using her extensive knowledge and training in diversity, equity, and inclusion, Emily led efforts to diversify the Nantucket Lighthouse School community and build a culture of collaboration and growth. A teacher at heart, she has taught at grade levels ranging from preschool to eighth grade at independent schools across Nantucket, in California, and New Jersey.

“I am thrilled to begin this role as Brimmer and May’s Lower School Head and get to know and serve the Brimmer community. Working in the classroom is my true passion and this new role will allow me to focus more closely on teacher development, student learning, and curricular and pedagogical practices,” said Emily Miller. “Philosophically and professionally, I am drawn to Brimmer’s innovative initiatives, project-based approach, and commitment to diversity. While visiting the School, I was struck by the warmth of the community and its child-centered approach. Students were joyful and engaged, and teachers conveyed a deep commitment to their learning, as well as to Brimmer and its philosophy. I feel very fortunate to be joining such an outstanding group of educators.”

As Head of the Lower School, Emily will be responsible for overseeing Brimmer’s PK – 5th grade program and will uphold the school’s high standards for academic excellence while enhancing the joys and wonders of childhood. This appointment comes in the wake of Thomas Fuller’s retirement. Fuller has been a valued and treasured member of the Brimmer community for 25 years and will play a central role in Emily’s onboarding team, ensuring a smooth transition at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

Emily received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Boston University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University. Having grown up on Nantucket, Emily enjoys exploring natural spaces, spending time with her college-aged children, and traveling with her husband Schuyler. Emily and her family spend much of their free time on the water or walking its shores.
