James Otis Scholars

Joe Iuliano
The Upper School named eight seniors James Otis Scholars for the 2019-2020 school year. Seven of the Scholars were able to attend the 12th Annual James Otis Lecture at Faneuil Hall on Tuesday, September 24. The lecture, sponsored by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, was titled, “Reconstruction: The Failure of Law and Its Enduring Consequences.” This lecture presented background information about the Civil War and Reconstruction and focused on “the chilling story of the murder of black Republicans in Colfax, Louisiana on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1873 that lead to the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Cruikshank 92 U.S. 542 (1876) and ushered in Jim Crow laws and the ‘Equal but Separate’ doctrine adopted by the Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896).” A panel featured three authors and historians: Boston College Professor of History, Heather Cox Richardson, Washington Post journalist Charles Lane, and Macalester College Professor Emeritus James Stewart. Each delivered insights, perspective, and commentary and answered questions on this topic.

Congratulations to the following students for being selected for their excellence and high achievement in the study of US History:
