LS Community Service Assembly

Our Lower Schoolers took part in a very special Share assembly on Zoom to talk about their community services projects for the year. Our students' understanding of kindness, responsibility, and empathy shined through the screen as they spoke passionately about the organizations they've chosen to support.

Pre-Kindergarten held a clothing drive earlier this fall, and families brought in gently worn clothes to donate to families in need. They are also making silly, fun videos full of funny jokes and dance parties for health care workers and people in assisted living homes to help brighten their days and make them smile.

Kindergarten students are collecting school supplies and stuffing backpacks for children who are currently homeless. They have been learning about the difference being "wants" and "needs," which has helped them understand the importance of collecting these essential items for children who may not have them.

Fostering a lifelong love of books is a primary goal of first grade, and our first graders wanted to share that passion with other children by organizing their second annual book drive for the Reach out and Read Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. Their goal is to collect 100 books by the 100th day of school!

Our second graders have also decided to focus on collecting school supplies for children in need. They will be organizing a school supply drive for Cradles to Crayons, and the Lower School community was excited to participate.

After learning about the positive impact access to hygiene products can make in the lives of people who may not have them, our third graders decided to work with Hope and Comfort, an organization that provides essential hygiene products like soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and shampoo to people in need in the Greater Boston area. They also have been learning about the power of letter writing, so they plan to include handwritten letters with their donations.

Prior to this year, fourth graders would give back to the Brimmer community by collecting and emptying all Lower School recycling bins each week. As procedures have changed this year, they decided to come up with a new way to give back to our community. Starting in January, they will return all the snack and lunch boxes and bags to the kitchen every Wednesday to help our kitchen staff.

Since so many fifth graders love animals, they wanted to focus on a project to help animals living in shelters thrive. After some thorough research, they have decided to partner with the MSPCA, an organization that supports animals and pet owners in the Greater Boston area in a number of different ways. They plan to make fleece blankets to donate to the MSPCA so the animals currently in the shelter can stay warm and feel loved. They even put together a heartwarming video with pictures of pets wrapped in warm blankets!

As Head of Lower School Mrs. Miller wrote in her weekly Brimmer Bulletin letter to Lower School families, "Our Community Service Share Assembly is another example of students’ kindness and responsibility as they announced their community service projects for the year. Many thanks to our teachers for guiding students in these efforts and for modeling these ideals in the classroom."
