Cecelia's grant will be used to allow the Brimmer and May Science Department to purchase a MiniOne BioScience Classroom Kit. This relatively inexpensive kit contains both PCR and Electrophoresis systems for teaching hands-on biotechnology labs in the classroom.
Biotechnology has become an increasingly important part of the life sciences industry and biology curriculum. It is also a topic of news articles and our daily lives. One of the major drawbacks to incorporating more biotechnology into the science classroom has always been the cost of equipment. This kit will allow all students in a class to be involved in labs and have an understanding of these processes when they appear in the news (PCR for COVID for example). The mini kits also take less one to run, allowing for completion of labs in a single class period producing more accurate data.
