Sixth Graders Design Amusement Parks

Sixth graders in Ellinor Wareham's class designed their own amusement parks! Students had to stay under a budget of $50,000 and pay for the area of space at the base of their rides and the perimeter (for fencing around the ride). In addition to the math portion, students wrote descriptions of their rides which were based either on real rides, impossible rides (like flying to the moon), or extremely dangerous rides. (Some rides went into lava or had a roller coaster speed of 500 m.p.h). Creativity was a must! Finally, students created amusement park diagrams—either on paper, by building a model of the park, or by using the app Minecraft. Students presented their work, projected their Minecraft rides on Apple TV, and simulated riding to show the audience how the ride would work.
