Brimmer Welcomes New Board of Trustees Member

This fall, Brimmer and May welcomes a new member to its Board of Trustees.

As a parent engaged in the Lower and Upper Schools, an avid believer in the active, but balanced role of technology in education, and significant business leadership skills, he is excited to take on this most challenging volunteer role for Brimmer and May!

Dr. Ulrik Juul Christensen
P ’18, ’23

Ulrik and his wife, Dr. Christina Ellervik, are the proud parents of current 5th grader, Elisabeth Juul Ellervik and 10th grader, Caroline Juul Ellervik.  Ulrik and Christina were first drawn to the unique pedagogy of Brimmer and May when they moved here from Denmark last year and have been very involved in the life of the School from the first day.  Ulrik immediately volunteered his considerable expertise in individualized learning and adaptive learning platforms that he has devoted his career to as CEO of Area9 and at McGraw Hill.  Last year at Brimmer and May, he was a founding member of the Technology and Education Committee and has helped to move the School forward as we follow the Strategic Priorities adapted two years ago.

Ulrik grew up in a family of educators and has long had an affinity for teaching and learning.  Since founding his first medical simulation company, Sophus Medical, in 1997, he has devoted his professional life to advancing an improved, highly individualized way of learning, and has been driving the development of Area9 and McGraw-Hill Education’s adaptive learning platforms.

Ulrik has always been an entrepreneur and business leader focused on education.  In 2014, Area9 and McGraw-Hill Education joined forces through an acquisition of Area9’s educational company and most of Area9’s educational activities.  Two new companies rose out of this acquisition:  Area9 Labs was established to continue to cutting edge research in educational technologies, and Area9 Learning was established to pioneer the market for adaptive learning in the corporate space.  As a result of this acquisition, Ulrik serves as both the Executive Chairman of Area9 and the Senior Fellow for Digital Learning with McGraw-Hill Education.

Ulrik earned his Medical Doctor degree at University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Health Sciences Medical School.  In addition, he currently serves as Chairman of the Board at CECU ApS and Comapping A/S.  He has also served as a Board Member and Treasurer at Association for Industry Employed Physicians.

The Board is eager to tap into Ulriks’s extensive business, education, and technology expertise as we move forward with year two of the Strategic Priorities for 2013 and Beyond.

Welcome, Ulrik!
