Lower School Arts

Visual Arts

Art classes begin in PK and meet weekly throughout the Lower School. Students explore a wide range of media and complete individual and collaborative projects. Painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and work with clay, fiber, and found materials are all part of the curriculum. An open studio approach encourages young artists to be inventive and original. The curriculum is designed to build on art skills and experiences as students advance through the grades. Students are introduced to art history and learn to appreciate different art forms through viewing original works of art and use of the Smartboard technology. Art projects are often designed to complement the classroom curriculum.

Lower School Music classes focus on singing, moving, listening, reading, writing, improvising, and composing. Students develop a music vocabulary through the exploration of sound. All students work with barred Orff instruments and unpitched percussion. Coordination with classroom units and themes enriches learning. Several performance opportunities occur yearly. Students participate each week in a Second and Third Grade Chorus or Fourth and Fifth Grade Chorus. Students in Grades 3-5 may also elect to study a concert band instrument and participate in a Beginning or Intermediate Ensemble.

Drama and music classes in PK and K are a collaborative effort, helping to provide a foundation in both areas for the years ahead. Classes include storytelling, creating, improvising, and movement. In Grades 1-5, students explore sensory awareness, improvisation, characterization, and setting in weekly drama classes. Through theatre games and other activities, students work together and develop cooperative and collaborative skills. Third grade presents plays acted entirely in French, and fourth and fifth graders present a joint production. All students enjoy performing informally and formally in a sophisticated, state-of-the-art theatre.
