Varsity Girls' Soccer vs The Waring School

An excellent game from Alexis Ifill '17 in goal and six goals from Shani Breiman '18 highlighted an 8-4 win over league rival Waring on Tuesday afternoon at Orr Field. The first half was a seesaw of action as both teams scored and both goalies made several great saves. The Gators scored first as Shani finished a nice solo run to put the Gators on the board. Waring got two back to take the lead as they put together some nice passes to set up close range shots that Alexis could not keep out of the net. She saved everything else in the first half and helped the girls overcome steady pressure from the Waring offense. At the twenty minute mark Kimberly Santos '18 made a heads up play by throwing the ball in quickly to an open Shani who beat one defender and slotted it by the keeper to tie the game. A few minutes later Sofia Coronado '18 hit a shot that the keeper initially saved, but Kimberly was there to put in the rebound and give the Gators a 3-2 lead going into halftime.

The girls entered the second half knowing that the first ten minutes would be important to deciding the game. They picked up the pressure, and this led to three goals in the first ten minutes of the half. Sophie Lapat '18 took a great pass from Shani and placed a hard shot past the keeper. Then Shani, after being stopped by the goalie on a breakaway, put in a rebound off another Sophie shot. Zia Angell '16 then chased down a loose ball and sent it across to Shani for a 6-2 lead at the 30 minute mark of the second half. Meanwhile, Alina Fischer '16 and the defense locked down on Waring's two best players, and Alexis made sure to take care of everything that got through. Shani scored her fifth goal on a nice through pass from Sophie, and then Waring started to pick up the pressure again. They scored a goal to make the score 7-3 and could have had several more if not for the great play of Alexis, including a diving save with her back. Shani scored her sixth and final goal with five minutes to go, and Waring added one more to make the final 8-4. The win keeps the Gators in second place in the league, and they are back in action on Wednesday against Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall.
