GATORS BEAT NEWMAN, 4-3

The Brimmer and May Varsity baseball team concluded regular season play last Friday as they beat Newman Prep in extra innings 4-3. The Gators received another strong pitching performance by Nate Cappuccino ’14 who pitched 7 strong innings while striking out 6 batters and giving up only 3 runs on 6 hits and walking one batter. The Gators had some timely hitting during the game and led 3-2 going into the top of the 7th inning when some unfortunate errors surfaced and allowed Newman to tie the game. With 2 outs and a runner on second, a Newman player hit a single up the middle to centerfield. As the go ahead run rounded third, Keenan Iuliano ’15 fired a laser of a throw to home and Kevin Gates ’15 applied the tag to end the inning. The Gators had a few opportunities to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but some mental lapses prevented that opportunity to close out the game. Stan Barlow ’13 came in to pitch at the top of the 8th and pitched a 1-2-3 inning preserving the tie and allowing our team a chance to win. Dietrich Pultinas ’14 led off the bottom of the 8th with a single, and Gates advanced him to second on a ground out. Josh Finn ’15 roped a double down the left field line which scored Pultinas to win the game.
The Gators finished the season in first place with a perfect 8-0 record in league play.
