For the first time in the team’s history, the JV Boys’ Soccer team is 3-0. The team is developing an ethic of furious, relentless play, and that trend continued yesterday in Waltham as the Gators traveled to face the Chargers of Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall. The Gators faced a team comprised entirely of students older and, in some cases, substantially larger than them. The Gators came out and immediately set the tone for the game, starting challenging, well-timed runs that put early pressure on the Charger keeper. About fifteen minutes into the half, wing midfielder Will Drubner ’17 beat his man, dribbled two steps, and sent a beautiful through ball to striker Sean Lee ’16 who quickly slotted a shot past the Charger keeper. The lead did not last as CH-CH converted on a bouncing ball in front of Gator keeper Andrew Calhoun ’17. The goal somewhat deflated the Gators, and the Chargers redoubled their efforts to put more pressure on Calhoun. He responded with aplomb, making several diving saves and keeping the score tied 1-1 going into halftime.
After the second half started, Brimmer regained their previous confidence and mounted several strong runs but could not find the back of the net. About ten minutes into the second half, the Chargers again converted on a ball in front of the Brimmer goal. Facing their first deficit of the season, the Gators did not shrink away against a bigger opponent. Three minutes after the Charger go-ahead goal, wing striker Torsten Bergersen ’17 scored his second goal of the year by blasting a low-bending shot that beat the Charger keeper to the near post. The Gators sensed that victory was within reach and launched all-out attacks on the Charger end. Bergersen converted again after CH-CH-’s massive sweeper collided with a streaking Sean Lee. The ball trickled to Torsten who found the far corner with another rocket off his right foot. Brimmer and May did not look back after that goal, sending wave after wave of attacking players to the Charger goal. With three minutes left in the game, Sean Lee found himself alone with the ball at the Charger eighteen and roofed a ball to the far corner, and two minutes later sophomore Joey DeFranc ’15 scored the Gators’ fifth goal with a well-placed shot above the Charger keeper.
