GATORS IMPROVE TO 5-1 WITH 2-1 WIN AGAINST BTA

The JV Boys’ Soccer team played their second home game of the season, hosting Boston Trinity Academy. BTA’s aggressive play in the early stages of the game indicated that they were pressing for a measure of revenge, but the Gators were up to the challenge. With strong passing and excellent spacing, the Gators started excellent runs on goal, but the Lions’ star keeper made a series of tremendous saves to keep Brimmer off the scoreboard.  At the twelve minute mark of the first half, the Gators broke through. A strong run by wing striker Torsten Bergersen ’17 resulted in a corner kick; Bergersen took the kick himself and bent a perfect ball into the six-yard box. The Lions’ keeper deflected the ball out to the eighteen where stopper Mark Asch ’18 found himself unmarked. Asch blasted a shot into the top corner and gave Brimmer a lead they would not relinquish heading into the second half

The second half was notable for physical play and tremendous goalkeeping from both sides. Brimmer continued their excellent offensive runs but were not able to convert their chances. About seven minutes into the half, the Gators were able to double their lead. The scoring tandem of Bergersen and Sean Lee ’16 found their usual roles reversed. Lee collected a fifty-fifty ball at the bottom of the center circle and dribbled down the left side, pulling the defenders out of the goal box. Lee spotted Bergersen alone and sent a low, hard cross that almost eluded Bergersen, but Torsten got just enough of his toe on the ball to deflect it into the Lions’ goal. Jack Kreisler ’17, playing his first half in goal, acquitted himself quite well, making a couple of solid saves and starting effective Gator counterattacks with booming punts. BTA did get on the board with a scoring run that saw just about every Lion striker and midfielder crashing the Brimmer goal; the Gators experienced some confusion in assuring that every Lion was marked, and the ball somehow found its way into the back of the net. The Gators then locked down their defense, led especially by Grant Iuliano ’18 who made a game-saving play when a Lion attacker broke in alone on goal.
