Varsity Boys' Soccer vs Gann Academy

The very next day the Gators played host to Gann, who came out with a lot of confidence after their upset the day before. The Gators again took an early lead when Kevin Gates '15 collected a clearance 30 yards out, beat two defenders, and sent a powerful shot into the back of the net. Gann was able to tie the game midway through the half, when their speedy striker dribbled the ball toward the corner. This drew the defenders to that side of the field and left Gann's right winger unmarked in the heart of the Gator area. Gann's striker sent an excellent cross across the box were it was tapped home by the unmarked winger. The Gators regained the lead in the dying seconds of the half, when Mike Gordon '16 delivered a beautifully weighted cross to Kevin Gates' feet in almost the same position as he had started for his first goal. This time he beat one defender and sent another powerful shot into the goal. The half ended with the Gators up 2 - 1.

In the second half, the Gators finally found their rhythm and demonstrated the level of soccer they are capable of. Less than five minutes into the half, Aaron Yemane '14 controlled a deflected ball just inside the Gann area. He pushed the ball to his right to clear the defender in front of him and sent a shot into the corner of the goal to give the Gators a two goal cushion. Ten minutes later, Aaron became the provider when he lofted a ball over the Gann defensive line and Jesse Spivak '14 used his speed to outpace his man and go one-on-one with keeper. Jesse sent a low shot past the keeper into the bottom corner to make it 4 - 1. With fifteen minutes remaining, Kevin Gates was looking for his hat-trick and found himself with ball in a similar spot to his first two goals. This time, however, his defender did a better job and forced him wide and cut off his shooting angle. As Kevin approached the touchline he pulled back a cross that passed across the box and Javier de Diego '14 volleyed home from close range for his first goal of the season. As well as the three goals in the half the Gators hit the woodwork four times and started to gain some much needed confidence on the offensive end of the field. The game ended in 5 - 1 victory for the Gators.
