International Student Admissions

At Brimmer, we are proud of our global and multicultural focus. This focus is reflected in all three divisions of the School, with students from many countries, including China, South Africa, Korea, Brazil, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark. Our international students are actively involved in and contribute to all areas of the School and community life and help make our institution dynamic and collaborative.
We are mindful of the fact that international students may have specific needs that require support. Through effective and consistent communication, our Co-Directors of International Students work with families during the admissions process and continue to support students and families throughout their time at Brimmer.

Middle and Upper School International Admissions

Students in the Middle and Upper Schools are expected to be at an intermediate English level. While English Language Support (ELS) is offered to students who are not yet confident and/or proficient enough to be independently successful in their classes, there is no formal English as a Second Language (ESL) program in place. The ELS program provides support for students who are proficient, but may be struggling in certain areas of their English language development. The ELS classroom instruction is intended to supplement and provide enrichment to the core curriculum. For qualified candidates who need support above and beyond the ELS classes, tutoring may be recommended or required.
In addition to the application requirements outlined on the application process page of the website, international students must submit the following:
  • International Parent and Student Supplement Application required for SAO applicants only. (see download below)
  • TOEFL or TOEFL Junior scores (students for whom English is not a native language)
  • Passport photo
  • Health and immunization records
  • Financial documentation to provide evidence of support during your stay
  • Guardianship/Homestay arrangements

Lower School International Admissions

While some of our youngest international students are English proficient and require no English language support in speaking, reading, or writing, we enthusiastically accept some well-qualified children at each grade level who have limited language arts skills in English. To enable these students to enjoy and benefit from our academic program we offer a specially designed English Language Support (ELS) class for students to reach academic success.
Admissions: Students take a Lower School Admissions assessment as part of the Brimmer application process. This includes a test component that helps us determine whether a child is at the beginning, intermediate or advanced stage of English language learning. The Admissions Committee carefully reviews each student’s application. Upon acceptance, the Admissions Office will inform parents as to whether their child will need to participate in our ELS program.
Pre-Kindergarten: The Pre-Kindergarten students are in a language rich setting and our English language learners receive language support from their teacher and teacher assistant. The ELS teacher is available for consultation if needed.
Kindergarten – Grade 5: Lower School students in Kindergarten through Grade Five who are identified as needing additional instruction, take English Language Support (ELS) during the regular school day. A fee applies for this program.
The focus of ELS for Pre-Readers is to help students in early childhood develop the skills essential to becoming successful and to develop their language fluency for increased comprehension and participation in class.
The focus of ELS for Readers is to help students develop their reading skills. Children work on increasing their vocabulary, comprehension, and their class participation. Our goal is to teach vocabulary, reading and writing skills, and to build academic confidence so that each child can get the maximum benefit from our rich school program. The ELS teacher consults with teachers and parents regularly and conducts assessments periodically to determine each student’s growth and needs.

In addition to the requirements outlined on the application process page of the website, all international students must provide the following:
  • Passport photo
  • Health and immunization records
  • Financial documentation to provide evidence of support during your stay
  • Guardianship/Homestay arrangements

Our Affliations

We are a member of the following organizations:

In order to provide an equal opportunity for all Chinese applicants interested in Brimmer, we have partnered with a company called Vericant. Vericant will conduct preliminary interviews and short writing samples with our applicants in Mainland China. Vericant does not evaluate candidates but instead, posts the interviews online for the Brimmer Admissions Committee to review. Candidates will then be selected for formal interviews, either by Skype or in person, when possible.

The Vericant interview is a required component of the application process for all Chinese students currently living in China. We suggest that you complete this process as early as possible, as priority will be given to those candidates whose interviews are complete before January 1, 2019. Our office will review your Vericant interview within two weeks of the interview date and contact you for a follow-up interview shortly thereafter if applicable. The deadline for interviewing with Vericant will be January 15, 2019. We strongly encourage you to complete the Vericant interview before submitting application materials to the School.
Please note that your application fee to Brimmer does not include the Vericant interview costs. To learn more about Vericant and to schedule an interview, please CLICK HERE.
