April 2024 Library Updates

This month in the library we celebrated Neurodiversity and Autism Awareness Month and Arab American Heritage Month.

Ninth grade students began researching a topic of their choosing from the Arab world, and they learned about how to evaluate fake news and misleading information in their Core and Wellness classes. Websites like factchecker.org and snopes.com are good tools to see if viral news is accurate. Allsides.com is a source that helps rate your media in terms of bias and accuracy.

As March closed out, we did March Madness Brackets for the Battle of the Summer Reading Community Books. This winter I met with students and teachers to make a list of books for the School to choose from. The committee decided on a theme of books that look at community and power, and then we created a list of 16 books that would battle it out to be our Summer Reading choices. The winners were: The Boys on the Boat by Daniel James Brown; The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas; Refugee by Alan Gratz; and The Giver by Lois Lowry. Thanks to the campaigning of students, two older books were brought back to the rotation. An upper school student committee member fought for The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, and enthusiasm from rising 6th graders brought back Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker!

As an inclusive private school community, Brimmer welcomes students who will increase the diversity of our school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, or any other characteristic protected from discrimination under state or federal law, in the administration of our educational policies, admissions practices, financial aid decisions, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
