Student-Built AI Lab: Training and Understanding Language Models
The Student-Built AI Lab will be integrated into existing computer science courses as well as
advanced electives and independent projects. Students will progress through a sequence of experiences. Early work will focus on building foundational knowledge of programming and machine learning concepts. Students will then begin experimenting with small-scale models, learning how to train and refine them using curated datasets. As they gain confidence, they will move into project-based work where they design and build their
own applications. The program will support both collaborative and independent learning. Students will work in small teams to develop projects, share ideas, and troubleshoot challenges. At the end of the cycle, they will
present their work and reflect on both the technical and ethical dimensions of what they have
