At Brimmer, we are proud of our global and multicultural focus. This focus is reflected in all three divisions of the School, with students from many countries, including China, South Africa, Korea, Brazil, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark. Our international students are actively involved in and contribute to all areas of the School and community life and help make our institution dynamic and collaborative.
In the Upper School, we offer a course called Foundation of English for Nonnative speakers. This course provides students with a strong foundation for success in a mainstream classroom setting by helping students develop their writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills.
We are mindful of the fact that international students may have specific needs that require support. Through effective and consistent communication, our Co-Directors of International Students work with families during the admissions process and continue to support students and families throughout their time at Brimmer.
Middle and Upper School International Admissions
Students in the Middle and Upper Schools are expected to be at an intermediate English level. While English language support is offered to students who are not yet confident and/or proficient enough to be independently successful in their classes, there is no formal English as a Second Language (ESL) program in place. The ELS program provides support for students who are proficient, but may be struggling in certain areas of their English language development. The ELS classroom instruction is intended to supplement and provide enrichment to the core curriculum. Middle School students must be living with parents, while Upper School students only secure a host family in the local area. For qualified candidates who need support above and beyond the classes offered, tutoring may be recommended or required. A TOEFL is required for all Upper School applicants and a TOEFL Jr. for Middle School students.
To learn more about the application requirements please see theapplication processpage of the website.
Lower School International Admissions
While some of our youngest international students are proficient in English and require no English language support in speaking, reading, or writing, we accept some well-qualified children at each grade level who have language arts skills in English that are near grade level.
Students take a Lower School Admissions assessment as part of the Brimmer application process. This includes a test component that helps us determine whether a child is at the beginning, intermediate or advanced stage of English language learning. The Admissions Committee carefully reviews each student’s application to make the best decision. Some students may be accepted to Brimmer on the condition that outside tutoring for reading and writing is required.
ARE YOU APPLYING FROM CHINA?
In order to provide an equal opportunity for all Chinese applicants interested in Brimmer, we have partnered with Vericant. Vericant conducts preliminary interviews and short writing samples with our applicants in Mainland China. Vericant does not evaluate candidates, but instead, posts the interviews online for the Brimmer Admissions Committee to review. Candidates will then be selected for formal interviews, either online or in person, when possible.
While the Vericant interview is optional, it is strongly encouraged for any Chinese students currently living in China. Our office will review your Vericant interview within a week of receiving the video, and the interview will be included in our Admissions Committee review.
Please note that your application fee to Brimmer does not include the Vericant interview costs. To learn more about Vericant and to schedule an interview, please CLICK HERE.
