B&M FALL SHORT TO CH-CH, 12-11

The Varsity girls’ lacrosse team played a solid game from start to finish on Friday, April 27, against an aggressive Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall team. The Gators tallied first when Nicole Gates ’13 came up with the opening draw control of the game and took it down the field to score. However, it was CH-CH that scored the next five goals of the game. The Gators defensive unit played together and stopped the charge from CH-CH’s leading scorer. Victoria Foster ’12 was able to come up with the next couple draw controls and convert them into well executed shots on goal. With the score 5-3 in favor of CH-CH, the Gators knew they needed to make every possession count. Kristin Gates ’15 played well in the midfield and was able to score off an 8-meter shot. CH-CH found the net a few more times in the first half to bring the score 9-4 at the half.

In the second half, Brimmer and May knew the game was within reach if they played smart and controlled possession of the ball. CH-CH won the opening draw control and scored quickly. However, it was Sammy Gordon ’14 that cut for the ball, and drove to net. Sammy shot a rocket past the goalie in the upper corner. CH-CH scored two more, but those would be the last goals of the game that CH-CH scored. Brimmer and May adjusted quickly and came up with the draw control and ground balls in the midfield and converted just about every possession into a goal. However, in the last minute of play, the Gators were down by only one goal, 12-11. CH-CH was trying to stall out the clock to win the game when the Gator defense trapped the ball on the sideline forcing CH-CH out of bounds. Shalise DePina ’13 carried the ball in the CH-CH 8-meter scoring area. The loose ball on the ground resulted in favor of CH-CH and there were able to stall out the clock in order to win the game. The Gators displayed a solid effort in all areas of the field. The hustle and possession were converted into goals scored by Kate Foster ’14, Kristin Gates, and Sam Cacciatore ’13 who each scored one goal for the Gators in the second half. Nicole Gates played hard in the midfield and served as a connection between the offense and the defense and was able to find the goal three times in the second half.
