November & December Updates

Elyse Seltzer, Supervisor of the PK-12 Library Program

The Brimmer Library is on the land of the Massachusett nation who we honor for having been stewards to this land for generations. We extend our respect to elders of the past, present, and future. We recognize the violence committed in the name of this country that has allowed us to be here. We commit to listening to and amplifying voices of Indigenous People.

For Indigenous People’s Month we took time to honor Native Americans, their resilience, and their contributions to American society throughout history, including today. This year we emphasized artistic contributions through Inuit art in the windows of the library and a slide show of artists inside the library.

I connected with a gallery in Oregon that will loan us art from their Homelands exhibit where artists from various nations decolonized maps of their homeland. This winter the art will be on display in the library, and students will make connections to our own work to decolonize the library space, especially regarding the Dewey Decimal System. More to come then.

I traveled to St. Louis for NAIS’s annual People of Color Conference. There I led a discussion with other librarians and English teachers on Decolonizing the Canon in the Era of Banned Books. The speakers were great. I made reels about Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, Dr. Liza Talusan and Dr. Chris Emdin and their books.

In the classroom, 11th and 12th graders are gearing up for their Major Author Studies. I spoke with students about literary criticism and how to choose an author who has literary criticism written on their works.

As an inclusive private school community, Brimmer welcomes students who will increase the diversity of our school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, or any other characteristic protected from discrimination under state or federal law, in the administration of our educational policies, admissions practices, financial aid decisions, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
