January & February Updates

Elyse Seltzer, Supervisor of the PK-12 Library Program

Happy New Year!

The library is off to a great start in 2024. In January we settled back into the space with patrons finding the library spaces to be a cozy place to gather, work, and hang out with friends. I have enjoyed speaking with students in Grades 11 and 12 about their reading interests as they finalize who they will research for their author study. We also had lessons on what literary criticism is and how to find it. All students should make sure they have a Boston Public Library card to increase their access to quality resources.

I visited a French IV class to show them our new access to World Langauge magazines in sora. They chatted about the latest trends in film, fashion, and more en français.

Photography students doing research on issues close to their hearts came to the library to find resources on the environmental impact of fast fashion and on how photography can impact social justice movements.

6th grade has started their beloved bridge project. Students were introduced to noodletools which assists in making citations and a bibliography. Students immediately made the connection as to how they could use this tool in their history class research on different religions.

7th grade is working on their unsung heroes projects and using our biography books and databases. I loved learning about these incredible people who have made such an impact on our world.

Our Library Learning Commons (LLC) has the privilege of temporarily housing a collection of art from Raven Makes Gallery in Sister Oregon, Decolonizing the Map through Indigenous Art: THE HOMELANDS COLLECTION. Through classes with the librarians, students will have an opportunity to make connections to the libraries’ efforts to decolonize the Dewey decimal system while making interdisciplinary connections from what they have learned about classification, maps, and indigenous groups in the Americas. I recommend making a special trip to the LLC to see the art while it is here (before March)! The library is open during the school day from 7:50 am - 3:30 pm. To keep this beautiful loaned art safe, the library will be locked during closed hours.

This year for Black History Month, we are celebrating
Black Brillance. Next weekend is Lunar New Year. We hope patrons will stop by the library and decompress with a craft and help us ring in the Year of the Dragon in style.
